#SFATW: What I Love About France and Alsace

Good morning, good afternoon, good night everyone! How are you? I hope you had a wonderful week. I’m back today and very, very excited (but also slightly nervous) to kick off this Souvenirs From Across The World feature!

Souvenirs from across the world(3)

For those of you unaware of what it is, here’s a quick recap: Souvenirs From Across The World (SFATW) is a feature created to get to know each other a bit better, especially where we are all from, share a bit of our countries, cities, cultures, traditions, writers, authors. The main goal of Souvenirs From Across The World is to create a link between all bloggers, from everywhere, and to share a bit of the diversity that makes everyone unique on the blogosphere.
➡️ For more info on the feature, it’s here.
➡️ To see the themes for the upcoming SFATW blog posts, it’s here!

This month’s theme is Things I love about my country and/ or hometown. If you didn’t know it by now, I am French (yes, I have an accent and everything… ugh), and I’m living in a lovely region called, Alsace. I already took you more than once to my hometowns (here, and here), and today I will both focus on the country as a whole, and on Alsace because we have some pretty unique things as well. So, WHY do I love my country, I asked myself, and DAMN this was a hard question to answer, but I managed to find a couple reasons. And I’ll make a list, because let’s LOVE LISTS.

Reason 1: FOOD

ratatouille

Okay, I don’t know if it’s the best thing to start with, but I will do it anyway, because if there’s one thing I LOVE unconditionally about my hometown, and my country as a whole, it’s food. Or, gastronomie, as we say it in French. Anytime I am travelling, I’m thrilled to come back home to eat baguette, fromage (cheese) and just ALL THE FOOD. Since I’m very, very nice, I’ll obviously give you some mouth-watering pictures of some specialties…

Top: croissants and other French pastries, cheese soufflé / Bottom: Ratatouille, French Cheese, macaroons. (None of these photos are mine, all credits to the owners)

I’m not going to stay on that point very long, because next month’s theme is ALL FOOD RELATED -and I’ll give you some French recipies and secrets and ALL THE GLORIOUS FOOD IN THE WORLD. So, onto reason number two!

Reason 2: Architecture, monuments, and things to stare at occasionally

If everything doesn’t look like it’s right out of a fairytale – as some people would naively think, I have to admit that somedays, I feel pretty lucky to live in a place where, wherever I go, I’m always surprised by the architecture….and the monuments.

I will be very, very honest here. The Eiffel Tower is just one just tower made of metal. So what makes it so impressive, and how come everytime I look at it I feel… little and overwhelmed? Ugh, crazy.

paris

I could quote all the parisian monuments but… okay. Just one more.

The Sacré Coeur, in Paris.

Why don’t we STOP talking about Paris and highlight some lovely wonders of other places?

Saint Paul's Church, Strasbourg, France.

montpellier
The Château d’Eau, Montpellier, France.
La Petite Venise (The Little Venice), Colmar, France.

Reason 4: DIVERSITY

I know, we keep on praising diverse books, well let me get the hang of this and apply it to my own country because, erm, WHY NOT? I love the diversity of landscapes we have in France. North, South, East, West, nothing really is alike, in the architecture, the streets, the people, the monuments, the places, climate… Everything slightly changes, and I love it.

You have the typical little narrow streets of the South of France, sometimes with stairs and just overall cuteness.

The lovely, very hot yet slightly crowded beaches in the summer…beach i montpellier

The colorful houses from my hometown…colorful houses colmar

The typical red bricks houses from the North of France…

The places inspiring ghost and fantasy stories…

France park

Squares with stunning architecture… la grand place Lille

And so on…

Reason 5: Lifestyle

I don’t know if we French people are lazy, or bothering. We’re supposed to love going on strike (not really), complain A LOT (…okay, I’ll give you that), drink lots of wine (…okay, I know some people), walk around with bérets on our heads, and girls having a crazy French gorgeous wardrobe (no, and…not so much either).

nothing-to-wear-wardrobe

I’m no Cinderella, I don’t even own a béret,  and I’d rather spend my money on books than spend 1000 €, dollars or whatever on a pair of shoes. THAT BEING SAID, I have a nice compliment coming here, and something I love about France: it’s basically, I’ll call it, the lifestyle.

It’s how we have one-hour lunch break at least when we’re working. How we are allowed much more days-off (…yes, fingers crossed it stays this way). How we LOVE to meet around for café, dinner, how we love to reunite for holidays with the family, and gather for Christmas and other celebrations together, around a great table filled with food, wine (yes), baguette, cheese and every French-cliché-food you can think of.

wine

It’s also how, here in France, we have a special law protecting books. The price of books, actually, limiting the discount on books. Because I love books. Though I wouldn’t be against more English bookshops.

🌎

Alright, I hope you enjoyed this little blog post starting the SFATW feature, and that you’ll want to write about this as well! More bookish, food and fun subjects are coming with this feature, so stay tuned and THANK YOU for reading!

  1. I love my favorite Frenchie 😀
AAAAAWWWW My red brick houses ❤ I miss them! We can talk all day about food :p I can't wait to see your post next month, eheh!
The French lifestyle is something people envy us. I don't always get the "fashion capitale" thing and all because I find so many people badly dressed xD but we definitely have a way of life that's typical and so nice!
    Loved your post!!!!

    1. Ahh and I LOVE YOU THE MOST Donna 😛 ❤ I saw lots of red brick houses just a few days ago, haha, I have to admit it has its charms.
I don't get the fashion thing either, everywhere I look I feel like people aren't particularily well-dressed, but I guess people get this cliché from beautiful and rich neighborhoods or something, where everyone dresses with a million euros on them? 😛
Thank you so, SO much! ❤ ❤

  2. Um, I’m sorry, did you just say “ugh” after saying you have a French accent? DID YOU JUST SAY UGH???? ARE YOU NUTTERED???? FRENCH ACCENTS ARE THE CUTEST THING IN THE WORLDDDDDD!!!
Aahhh, I love France. And, of course, the number one reason is food 😋 I’ve eaten at some parisen cafes and also (somehow) at the Tour D’Argent, and honestly, I like the local, casual food even better! Every food in France is delicious!!! It’s amazing!!
HAHAH I’ve spent my whole life trying to pronounce “Sacré Cœur.” I STILL CAN’T DO IT IT IS SO HARD.
Wow I’ve never heard of La Petite Venise but IT IS SO CUTE!! France can’t make anything ugly, honestly.
Haha mainly we hear about French people being grumpy and uptight, but pshhh I don’t believe it! I have really good French friend from Lyon and she’s NOT grumpy and NOOOOOT uptight! But she does complain about the Air France strikes, she almost got stuck in the US! But I’m sure it’s not too common, right?

    1. Aww Becca you are way too sweet ahah, I guess since I’m French I’m a bit bothered about it all? I love English accents, and I’m always scared people wouldn’t understand me, at all, haha.
I am SO happy you loved the food there, if there’s ONE thing I love, it’s that I want to eat all the food all the time haha.
It’s actually 10 minutes away from my home, La Petite Venise, so if you ever want to visit, well .. I’ll be your guide 😛
Oh well I want to say it’s not that common, but…it wouldn’t be the entire truth. Strikes happen quite often sadly, not every week but every couple months or so, it depends, and it’s REALLY annoying :/
THANK YOU Becca for such a lovely comment, you are the HIGHLIGHT of my day ❤ ❤ ❤

Ohh thank you so, so much Jamie, I am so happy you liked this post ❤ I agree, it's kind of a hard law, but it's here to help, really, so in a way, it's not that bad 🙂 Thank you SO much for your contribution, I am so impatient to go back to Malaysia with you! Adding your post and going to read it right away! ❤

  3. Ohh this is a great post Marie, and wow those pictures of food look amazing as well, You’re making me want to hop on a plane to France just so I can have some of those macaroons and the pastries!
The rest of your pictures look amazing as well My only experience of France has come from when I went to Paris with my family and then again with my friend, I guess there’s still a lot more of France I need to experience and those pictures make me want to go on a tour right this second.
Great post, I’ll definitely try and contribute something before the 9th of October, there’s a lot I love about England after all! 😀

      1. That’s all right! And I have a serious case of wanderlust so I always love seeing posts about other countries and cultures.
I definitely feel like I need to travel more, there are so many placed in Europe, not just France, that are so close and have so much to offer.
There’s so much I love about England as well, I have quite a few reasons I can come up with! 😀

    1. Haha no we’re definitely normal people! It’s funny to see how people from France see themselves, versus how everyone else around the world sees us. I do love a great baguette though haha 😛 Thank you so, so much Pamela for your lovely comment, and your contribution, Ecuador, WOW. I’m going to add you right away and read that 😍😍

      1. I’m a french student so this was SO MUCH GOLD. And baguettes and croissants rock. As well as cheeeeese. You have so much cheese. Ecuador imports some of your cheese, but not much. But we should!

And you’re very very welcome! I had so much fun putting together the post. It made me think about stuff I hadn’t realized before. Except for food. We all love our food XD

      2. Ohhh really, you are? That’s SO awesome! We can speak French together then, ahah. Are you planning on becoming a teacher or something different? 🙂
Oh yes, cheese. I never realize how much I LOVE our cheese until I’m leaving. I miss it so much haha.
This makes me the happiest, really! ❤ And yes, I feel like we ALL love our food. And why wouldn't we, food is GREAT 😀

      3. Mais oui! Haha, I’m studying International Business Management, and the career is trilingual, so french and english are mandatory. I don’t think I’m fluent enough in french to teach it but I feel confident enough about it to know I won’t be completely screwed if I ever go to a french-speaking country haha!

      4. YAY! I will remember that!

Lol, neither. I’m in the middle! Two years down, two to go! But yes, I love it!

Btw, quick question: Are there going to be more SFATW? As in another opportunity to do the exchanging of souvenirs? I don’t think I will be able to do it this time, but I would definitely like to try it some other time!

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Ohh well that’s awesome! As long as you love it, it’s all that matters 🙂
Well, for now the subscriptions for the next souvenirs exchange will start in October, to send souvenirs at latest in December, and afterwards well, I will try to make it happen again, probably around summertime if I can, and if people are still interested 🙂 I’d love to make the souvenirs sending twice a year, but it will depend on how many people are motivated to do it 🙂

The photographs are absolutely stunning (just like you) and I really love how you highlighted so many factors that you love about France & Alsace (especially the food part)! 😉 I will definitely be posting my own SFATW sometime this month, so thank you for sharing!! Can’t wait to type my own ❤

  5. Loved reading this! I love pretty architecture SO much! All the photo you posted look so stunning. The food sounds amazing too! I am obsessed with macaroons. My sister went to France for a few days a couple of years ago and she said her and friend ate so much food 😂

  6. Great post Marie! I actually found out about this feature pretty late so I thought I was already behind but since there are still a lot of themes to write about, I’m definitely going to join! 😀 I’ve been planning to write posts about my country & city for a while and I think this might be a good opportunity to link it to SFATW 🙂 I learned French in high school, the language, but we still got to learn a lot about its culture and it was amazing! I never mastered the language, but still haha I also learn a lot about it from movies and books and I always want to be there someday! & french pastries are the best! <3<3

    1. Thank you so, SO much, I’m so happy you enjoyed it! And you’re not behind at all, you can still write a blog post on that subject until October 9th, and there’ll be a new theme in October, and so on 🙂 I’m excited to see you join this, THANK YOU!! ❤
Well I can't really blame you, even if I am French, I find our language incredibly difficult ahah, I can't imagine having to learn it from scratch. French pastries are SO good though ahah ❤

      1. Me too! I’ve got some ideas on write to write especially when it’s about FOODS! So many delicious, tasty foods from my country! ❤ I know right! I lost it when we were learning the feminine and masculine verbs </3 but I could still introduce myself in French though 😛

  7. I haven’t been to your hometown but I live across the border in Germany so I will go explore it one day, it looks beautiful! I have been quite close because I once went to the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg and La Montagne des Singes, and it was a really nice area.

Where I’m living now is not my home country (that would be Australia), but if I had to say what I love about Germany so far, it would be the pretty old houses, the Black Forest, and the network of great cycle paths that covers the whole area (many of which I plan to follow into Alsace!).

Your post reminds me that I have so much of France yet to discover, and so much French food to taste. Guess I’ll have to start planning some trips 🙂

    1. Ohh that’s so great you’re living so close-by! I love these places, though I haven’t been to the Montagne des Singes in a while, I’m definitely going back soon ❤
You're from Australia? Wow, that's incredible (and so far away from Germany!) 🙂 I love old houses in Germany as well, they're so gorgeous and dreamy.
Oh yes, please do plan some trips, and tell me ALL about it afterwards 😀
Thank you so, so much for your sweet comment ❤

  8. I love this post Marie, you are making me want to visit France so badly. The idea of visiting all the wonderful places and seeing the beautiful architecture is so exciting to me. I remember when I was younger I watched a Mary Kate and Ashley film ‘Passport to Paris’ (not sure if you’ve seen it’ and I adored it. I watched it all the time so I could see the city in their.

Love these types of posts and learning more about France!

  9. I’ve barely been to france, but the food=heaven!!!! Even food I eat in other places that is French is pretty good. (baugettes=delicious) and omg cheeeeeese. Also why does everyone focus on the eifell tower? Like there are other monuments and other places in france guys. And all your pictures are so cute! I have another question–is France also diverse with ethnic groups and religion like it is with building style?

    1. Ohh I’m so glad you love French food, it’s the best isn’t it. I’m not really the good person to say that, I know, haha. I don’t know, it’s like for Los Angeles, everyone focuses on Hollywood, or London, Big Ben or something. There are so many hidden treasures as well 🙂
Yes, I’d say it’s very diverse as well, especially in big cities 🙂

  10. I loooved this! I’m sorry I couldn’t participate on this one (I completely missed out the date, ugh!), but I’m looking forward to take part on it next month.
French pastries are delicious and my mouth watered at those pictures, hahah. But what I enjoyed the most was seeing the diversity of your country! Sometimes, it is so easy for me to picture European countries with the traditional architecture and the narrow streets that I forget that all places are different! I really think this is something to be proud of!
It is also something that I love about my own country. We have a lot of diversity, mainly in our population! I know people from all around the world that live in Brazil and I think this is what makes my country even more unique.
Thanks for sharing and for creating such a great feature, Marie!

    1. Ohh thank you so much Lais, so happy you liked it! And the rules are a bit different since it’s a monthly feature. As I said in my blog post, you can participate to this theme all month long, so until October 9th, if you have the time, and come back here to leave your link so I can add you 🙂
I think it’s so great to have a lot of diversity, everything seems less boring this way, from the architecture to the people, it’s just so, so great! 🙂 Thank you so, so much! 🙂

I am so excited for French recipes in a future #SFATW feature! Also, I adore the colourful, sprawling architecture and “Little Venice” is so adorable! The French lifestyle is definitely one of my favourite things about France… *dreamy sigh* I must visit one day! Until then, these posts are the perfect remedy!
