How a book is made tag

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening everyone! How are you? How’s your week going so far?

Today I’m back with another bookish tag, and once again I decided to talk a bit about…writing. I’m not too used to talking about this, but well, I’m trying, in the hope that it gives me inspiration…and that you enjoy it! I’m answering the lovely questions from the How a book is made tag, thanks to The Orangutan Librarian !

1. Should you participate in National Novel Writing Month to create a book?

nanowrimo winner 2015

To be honest, I don’t think there’s a should, in anything when it comes to writing. There’s only want, and maybe at times, need. That very philosophical sentence being said, I can say that, from my experience, NaNoWriMo really is a good thing to MAKE you write. If you’re anything like me, setting goals for yourself, seeing a word-count get higher and higher, can be a massive motivation to get to writing. I mean, look at me. I wroke 62K in a month and two days last year thanks to NaNo. Since then – the past 11 months – I wrote 11 K at the most. So YES, I think it can be motivating, but it’s up to you, it’s either for you, or not.

2. Self-publishing or traditional publishing?

I don’t know all the tiny little details about self-publishing and traditional publishing, and I wouldn’t advice one, or the other, I guess whatever suits you the most!

3. Write one idea at a time or write all the ideas at once?

I’m more of a one idea at a time kind of person, since I’m currently obsessing about my one idea for almost two years. But I still have some other ideas in a corner of my mind. I mean, you can never have too many ideas, can you ?

4. What genre is the easiest to write?

I don’t think I’ve tried to write in too many genres to actually pick the easiest one. I do think however that contemporary is easier. For me.

6. Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere ?

possibilities

7. What age do you start writing?

Whenever you can hold a pen and write words ? Or was the question when did I start writing stories ? Hm because I can’t remember that either. I wrote when I was much, much younger, and I found old notebooks the other day. It was terrible. But I wrote something., I guess ?

8. What’s easiest to write? Short stories, stand-alones, series, etc.

Same as above, I’ve only written kind of stories that are supposed to be part of a big picture – meaning, a whole book, so…I’d say they’re the easiest? Who am I kidding. Nothing about writing is easy haha.

10. How fast can you type?

Fast. Very fast, I guess, since a couple of people already told me that. I think I might be a robot.

11. Do you write in the dark or in the light?

Does this mean, at night or during the day? Or like, with no lights on? Because I always write with lights on, otherwise my eyes would be hurting and…well, I’m not too comfortable writing in the dark haha.

12. Hand-written or typed?

My fingers can’t follow when I want to write everything on paper and in notebooks. I have too many ideas and I’m not that fast to write by hand, so I’ll go with typing.

13. Alone or with someone else?

Alone. For now.

the-plan-laugh

14. Any typing hacks?

Not really?

15. Are you already published?

I wish. #dream

16. When did you first consider being an author?

I don’t even know if I consider myself an author since I haven’t truly finished my novel, for now. Should I ?

17. How many books do you have in draft form?

One for now. Or maybe two.

18. Do you outline or no?

Yes, yes, yes. Then I change the outline as I write. Then I outline again. I’m going a bit crazy with outlining, if you ask me.

19. What’s your favourite note-keeping strategy?

Notebooks, and my Word document. I try and write little ideas on notebooks and sometimes ideas come as I write and I put them down on my computer in order not to forget them. But I think I love notebooks more.

20. What do you think about writing in different genres?

I haven’t tried too many genres for now, so I don’t really know how to answer this question haha.

If you read all of this, THANK YOU so much, and I hope that wasn’t too boring! 🙈

Writers, AND bloggers, I’d love to know: HOW and where do you keep your writing and blogging ideas? Do you have notebooks, journals, phone or computer? Let me know in comments! 💬

  1. THIS IS SO CUTE – I like this tag! ❤
I have never ever succeeded with NaNo – it's generally been held in really inconvenient times for me (i.e. exam times -cries-)
But I would not be surprised if you were a robot. You manage to do so much in the 24 hours of the day we have :O

      1. Haha well you still wrote something! Oh I think there’s a Camp NaNo in July if I’m not mistaken -or is it June? I’m not sure now. Anyway, I hope you’ll be able to write more later on. I get the struggle so much. I want to write and finish my story once and for all, but with working and keeping up with blogging, I have no time to do so 😦

  2. Great post Marie! I’m not a writer myself, though I’m always thinking about starting a story someday. I just need some ideas 🙂 But anyway, I do LOVE learning more about how other people’s writing process works 🙂
Though I do have a notebook where I write down any ideas for blogging! I tried working with computer files for that, but I always go back to a simple notebook.

    1. Thank you so, so much, so glad you liked this ❤ And who knows, maybe you're a writer deep inside, waiting for the right story to come out 🙂
Oh it's so great you have a notebook, do you keep it organized in a particular way? Sometimes I'm thinking of keeping a notebook, but I have no idea where to start 😂

      1. Who knows, maybe I’ll indeed still get some inspiration and write a book someday 🙂
Actually, my notebook is an agenda. I use it to plan the posts and then write ideas under the date. It’s a bit flawed, because there’s not that much room to write (just one page), but for now it works for me 🙂

  3. Great post! “Nothing about writing is easy” So true!! And also your point about never having too many ideas. Ideas are life! Makes it interesting! So I totally agree. Actually I agree with all of this, about writing. I write ideas in notebooks too, I’d be in trouble without my notebook ha ha. And I have to type too- writing longhand is just too slow. 🙂

  4. It’s always nice to read something about other people writing habit! I used to love writing too, mostly short stories and some of them were published, I want to try my hand on novel but I don’t think I have that kind of commitment?Hahaha but I do have this idea that has been with me for years and it is contemporary. I agree that contemporary is easier for me too, I once try to write fantasy story but the world building was too complicated hahaha and I type very fast too! I think we bloggers all do hahaha my mom often jokes that I’ll eventually break my keyboard with the way I type 😛

As for your question, I keep all my ideas on my notebook but also on the evernote on my phone because we’ll know when inspiration will come, right? Haha but then I will move it to my notebook because it’s easier for me to keep track there 😀 Great answer Marie! ❤

    1. Oh YES that I can understand. I thought I could never have the kind of commitment it takes to write a full novel, and NaNoWriMo really helped me commit to an idea for a whole month and write a little bit each day. Maybe that could be of help ? 🙂
You’re right, we never know when inspiration will strike ahah 😀 Thank you so much! ❤

      1. The thing is when it comes to writing, I always wait for that… perfect time. Even if I know it doesn’t exist and we should be the one who makes the time, right?haha I guess getting started is so hard for me, though I know finishing is even harder hahaha thank you for the advice Marie ❤

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Oh I understand. I tend to do that too, and I struggle to actually make time to write. I have so many other things I end up doing instead of writing, like, blogging for instance, haha. I guess thing is to try to put aside some time each day to write, if you can. I know I’d love to be able to do that, days are too short 😦

  5. Great post for this tag Marie, ❤ I loved reading your answers for this one as well. I've never managed to succeed at NaNo, maybe one year that can be my aim, and I didn't even take part this year given I focused on my blogging instead. 🙂
A lot of your answers are similar to mine as well. I mainly focus on one genre, mine would be fantasy rather than contemporary though given that's what I read the most of. However I don't write things down or even outline, I keep everything in my head and when I write I just see where I go with an idea! 😀
It was great learning a little more about your writing habits, are you taking part in Camp NaNo next time it's on? 🙂

    1. Oh thank you so, so much Beth! ❤ Maybe you'll be able to focus more on writing sometime and win NaNo, who knows! 🙂
It's crazy how you can just write with a single idea and no outline. I'm going crazy when I don't know where I am going haha, but I'm always impressed by people who are able to just write and see where it goes! 🙂
I have no idea to be honest, I guess I will have to see if I will have time. Thing is, I think I need to make time to write more if I really want to one day finish something, but…it's hard ahah.

      1. That’s all right! ❤ I hope so as well. I have a few ideas I can try and make more of someday it's just getting around to it.
It's just the way it works for me, I can't imagine how it works for you doing it any other way, but what works works.
So much to do so little time right? 😀

  6. Loved reading this tag Sweechie!! You’re so right, nothing about writing is easy! I don’t know how you lot do it 🙂
I keep my blogging ideas in a memo on my phone, as it is the only item that follows me everywhere I go xD I have a blogging planning on Excel that is linked to my phone and computer as well as a TBR and a review planning. I love being organized it makes me feel productive even when I don’t do a thing, hahahah!

  7. I commend you for being outlining crazy because that is once aspect of writing I can’t seem to wrap my mind around. I’m such a disorganized person 😂. I try to outline but then the character’s kind of decide to take over the story haha. As for notes, I have so many journals full of book ideas, little poems, and notes. I swear I get more ideas than I write and my brain is always hopping from idea to idea so I’ve yet to actually stick with one. 🙈
Great answers, Marie. I loved reading them! ♥

    1. 😂 😂 Well I feel lost if I don’t have an outline, just like in life when I don’t some sort of plan 😂 But I do change some things as the story goes on, the outline evolves.
Haha, oh I get it, sometimes I have so many ideas at the same time, my mind is going CRAZY 😂
Thank you so, so much Melissa! ❤

  8. LOVING ALL YOUR ANSWERS! I’m the same though, NanoWriMo had me writing so much and now I’m not quite writing as much anymore! As soon as the holidays come around, I’m hoping I can finish up my story because it is so fun! I keep all my ideas and story notes and ideas on my laptop just so that its easy to keep up with but keeping it in a journal LOOKS SO APPEALING! I would love so much for your book to be published SO ITS A DREAM FOR US BOTH! It would be perfection, I already know it! 😉

    1. Aww thank you so much my forever crazy ❤ I hope you'll be able to write more as holidays come. I know for me, best thing to do would be to be able to put aside some time one day here and there, but with blogging it's hard to find time ahah. Oh you are way too sweet, it's far from being perfect! ❤

  9. Hey, the definition of a writer is one who writes and you fit the bill. 😛 Be glad you have been able to keep on one idea for two years! A lot of people I know don’t have a fraction of that attention span, haha.

  10. Great tag! Writing is definitely a complex activity. One second you might have billions of ideas fighting their way to the tip of your pen (or fingers) and the other you get the.. syndrome de la page blanche? People who strive in writing their first novels are really amazing. The amount of time they put into it and the end result that just make them extremely happy (most of the time?) is amazing. Loved to see your own thoughts on the whole writing subject. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much! I agree, I am just impressed at people being able to write a full novel. I’m hoping in a few months if I’m lucky I’ll be able to say that as well, if I keep on working on my WIP. Even if it’s not published, knowing it’s there is already something 🙂

  11. The min I have an idea, I usually post it. (I don’t have many of them!)
For Christmas, I asked for a book journal. I think that will help me get organized. I like the spontaneity of it though or else it feels like a job…you know? I want to be unrestricted with schedules and stuff…I like randomness. I was a pantser during NaNo! (Prob why I didn’t win)

      1. They have them on Amazon and I added it to my Wishlist!!
I’m not fast. I just don’t get a lot of ideas lol. I have book reviews and that doesn’t take much of an idea…and I rarely do discussion posts bc, well, I have no ideas! 😂😂😂 My brain is a sieve and I suck at organizing anything and when I do organize I get stressed out so it’s not as much fun. But a journal where I could just write an idea down the min it happens and then put it away…that wouldn’t be too bad. You know?

      2. Oh yes, I see what you mean, and it’s a great idea! Who knows, maybe it will inspire you. When you get an idea at times, just writing it down and leaving it alone even just for a couple hours, and you can come back to it with even more inspiration than before 🙂

  12. Well first off, this was a great read and I enjoyed it immensely. Secondly, I prefer to utilize OneNote for my note keeping. I absolutely adore that it allows me to create pages, folders, binders, etc. in a digital form. It is also transferable/syncs up with all my devices and computers so if I swap from my main computer to my laptop or to my tablet I still have the same notes and don’t lose anything.

For things that I really want to remember or I can’t seem to sort out exactly I lean towards physical notebooks. It makes it easier for my muscle memory to recall what I wrote later and helps me make a decision on something that is stumping me (like deciding on a part of my story).
