Living the dream (3) : Washington, D.C, a.k.a I fell in love

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening friends, how are you ? I hope your week was great! Today is travelling time, and… I guess I need to get away a little bit, so I have decided to take back an old series of post of mine, because it’s about time, haha. I guess we all need to dream a little bit, at times, and writing this down just made me realize what I did and how I loved every single second of it. Alright, fasten your seat belts, plane, train, car, and we’re heading off to the USA !

It was three years ago that I step foot for the first time in the US. It had been one of my biggest dream since I first saw New York, saw countless of movies about the city and nurtured some dreams about living the big adventure. Three years ago, my sister and I decided to book a two-week holiday to the US, starting with New York City, going on to Philadelphia, then ending the trip down at Washington, D.C. It was to this day still the craziest, AND the best trip of my life.

Today I’m taking you back with me on the other side of the Atlantic, to Washington, D.C. I wanted to write this as a sort of travelling diary, I hope you’ll enjoy it.

train

We arrived in the afternoon by train, and I’ll always remember how the first thing we noticed, was the subway stations. They seemed weird and kind of futuristic, but maybe we were just tired, crazy and a bit of in awe of everything. After letting our massive suitcase at the hotel, we went for a walk, because we couldn’t stay doing nothing any longer. The morning on the train was enough of nothing already -except staring at the massive houses. Why does everything seem SO big, I remember asking myself ?

Another thing I remember, is how NICE people were in D.C. In New York, it’s true, everything is crowded and people don’t have time, or don’t even notice you anymore among the crowd of tourists. Here, we barely set two feet on the street that a nice lady asked us if we were lost and where we wanted to go. First impression: Washington D.C seems nice. And the first impression was actually true. Obviously since I am a massive map-junkie, I knew where we were heading : the White House, first stop, and hoping to catch a glimpse of Obama’s family. Maybe. Okay, or not.

the white house

Obviously we met some French people who gracely took our pictures in front of the White House, and obviously we were kind of thrilled about seeing everything we always saw behind a screen, whether it’s TV, or the computer, for real, in front of OUR EYES. A wonderful day indeed.

In the couple of days we stayed in Washington, we managed to see everything we wanted, walk a lot and A LOT, screamed every single time we could cross a “Benjamin Gates was here” monument on our list. Yeah, we kind of had a list, and yes we love National Treasure. Sorry.

A walk along the Mall is all it takes to fall in love with the city, or at least, that’s how I felt. Every monument, every single piece of architecture, and the river going in the middle, WWII commemoration, trees and benches and people and hot dog stands, and the gorgeous Congress at the end of it all ….

Everything seems half way too big and too important for this place, and half…well, almost, normal. People jog and walk around just like it’s any other place, while I took countless pictures and selfies with my sister, stared at everything I saw and was tempted to take a bath in the Congress’ fountain because, well, it was HOT. Also, the Library of Congress. BOOKS. GORGEOUSNESS everywhere. Send help.

A little village is all it takes to convince you to move there right now. I don’t know if Georgetown deserves the “village” title, I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be a whole city by itself, but…after the crowded New York City, it felt almost like I was back home. And we felt home, between these cute little houses standing side by side, shopping at every place we saw and eating delicious ice cream while laughing like crazy at something I can’t remember now, but that gave us stomach aches at the time.

We left the next morning, for a flight supposed to leave in the afternoon, but it was like Washington didn’t want to let us go. And we didn’t want to go home. A 12 hours flight delayed, and as we boarded the plane at 1 in the morning the next day, both wearing our U.S.A hoodies like real tourists, eyes barely staying open, I guess it really hit me, how we managed to do this. Despite some delayed trains and flight, we made it this far. And as I fell asleep countless times on the train back home – jet lag was AWFUL, and as we finally got back home safe and sound and bucket-list full of old dreams completed, and new ones already taking shape in our heads… yeah. We made it.

I hope you enjoyed this little post, and enjoyed travelling with me a little bit! Did you already go to  Washington, D.C, and did you enjoy it ? If not, would you like to go ?

What’s one place in the world that’s very high on your bucket list? Let’s chat in comments!

  1. Hahaha, everything does seem big there, right? Well, I’ve never been (cries a pool of tears) but members of my family went and said it was crazy. Even the meals are so big you can’t finish them, even if you’re French and used to never-ending meals!! Wow, the subway stations look so weird, I don’t like it! Give me a historical building any time!
Thank you for taking us with you to DC today, it felt like I was there a bit myself 🙂 ❤

  2. Wonderful article, Marie!
This was nice to view my nations capitol through a visitors eyes.
I am happy the folks in Washington were nice to you. 🙂
The next time you are in the states, and if you visit Alabama, I will show you some sights around Birmingham.
    ~Icky. 🙂

  3. Thanks for the trip! I have very fond memories as well. I actually didn’t go to Washintgon D.C. when I was there, but I was in N.Y and Phily, and travelled a bit in Pennsylvania. I loved N.Y. and went to a dozen Broadway shows because I just love the theatre and musicals. I actually saw Orlando Bloom on stage! haha it was a great time and next time I go, I’ll probably visit Washington too.

  4. A lot of my friends have gone to D.C. and love its beauty! I actually haven’t ever been up north further than North Carolina… but I hope to travel more and go there (or at least NY) someday! Thanks for sharing this post and satiating the wanderlust in me, Marie! 😉💕

  5. I loved this post! I just went to DC for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately it was only for 12 hours, but we packed in SO MUCH of the National Mall. We didn’t get to see the White House up close (SO JEALOUS you had a tour!!!), and we didn’t get to see the Jefferson Memorial either (also jealous). I LOVED the city, and now I feel like I need to go back there for several days to see the rest of it!

  6. Wonderful post, Marie! The monuments and all the buildings in D.C. really are picturesque. I actually worked in Annapolis on a Navy IT project, and it’s not far from there (it’s where the famous Naval Academy is) but would you believe I have never stepped foot in D.C.? I’ve driven on the belt parkway and through there plenty of times, but I never actually stopped to see the White House. I always wanted to go act like a tourist for the day. Everything in D.C. is mega expensive. Way more than any other city on the East Coast. I’m glad you enjoyed it here. I wish you would’ve had the time to try some food in Philly. Cheesesteaks and hoagies are the best! 🙌 Ha! NY is so not a place where people will talk to you on the streets. If you need directions, you usually need to find a cop. 🙂

    1. Thank you so, so much, Jillian! ❤ Ohh it's too bad you didn't get the chance to go there. This happens to me often in my hometown, someday I realized that I passed by something great, like monuments or touristic stuff, all this time, and didn't take time to really get there and appreciate it. Being a tourist, actually, ahah. It feels nice once in a while to do tha t:)
Ohh I wish so, too, but well it will be for the next time I'm in Philly, for sure! 🙂

  7. I’ve been to Washington twice and really enjoyed it. Such a rich history in that city–even if I’m not American it’s very fascinating. I definitely have a lot more to see there. I really want to go one time to see the Cherry Blossoms…that is on my bucket list for sure!

  8. How cool! Glad you enjoyed visiting DC. I’ve been here a while and always discover somewhere new. I think the best time to visit is in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom and there are white and pink leaves everywhere.
Lol I agree that the subway looks kind of futuristic. I thought the same when I first saw it. Actually, I though spaceship.

  9. I loved this post so much Marie! ❤ I've never been to Washington before though it is on the list of places I need to visit, and wow your pictures have made me want to find a flight the next time I have time off work. 😀 I have family who have been there, and who go back there a lot as well, and they've recommend it to me as somewhere I need to go when I'm next planning a trip to America.
Also I can't believe you had a 12 hour flight delay! Were you stuck in the airport the whole time because I can't even imagine that! The longest delay I've had was five hours and god was that unbearable.

    1. Thank you so, so much Beth! ❤ It's really worth a visit if you ever get the chance to go there. ❤
We were, we passed security and everything, so we really were stuck…Needless to say I know the airport like the back of my hand now haha. At least there were librairies and Wi-Fi to survive haha, but … yeah it was kind of unbearable aha.

      1. That’s all right. ❤ I hope one day to be able to, I want to visit more places in the states because I've only been to a few at the moment.
Yeah at least there was something you could use to entertain yourself but wow that must have been dire, hopefully you'll never have a delay that long again! 😀

      2. New York, Vegas, LA, San Francisco and Florida. But there are still so many states I want to go to, and I’d love to go back to New York one day as well.
What about you? I know Washington obviously, and I think I remember seeing a post about New York on your blog a while back as well!

  10. OMG I LIVE IN DC!!!!! Well, actually in suburbs right outside of DC buuuut same thing…I mean my sister lives in actual DC….so…
I’m surprised you love DC so much! I’ve never felt a particular fondness to it. It’s always felt like the same ‘ol city I’d been to SO. MANY. TIMES. But I’m with you on the Library of Congress: ALL THE BOOKS I LOVE IT!
    Scrumptious post, Marie!

    1. OHHH REALLY? That’s SO great! Well next time I come (because I will someday, I loved it too much not to), I know who to meet 😀 I understand, I guess we get that kind of feeling when we’re really familiar with a place. I used to feel the same way about my hometown, right until I left, and came back months afterwards. Thank you so much!! ❤ ❤

  11. Ahh wow sounds incredible!!! Never been to America before (unless you count in transit- which Americans do cos they go overboard taking your fingerprints and photo- even if you don’t leave the airport) really really want to go- and yes I would do the same thing national treasure!!!

  12. Oh, Washington does look really great! I haven’t been there yet, but it’s definitely on my bucket list and even more so seeing these pictures and reading your story! I like this type of posts, it kind of feels like we got to join the trip in a small way 🙂 But if I ever get to go, I’ll definitely also do the National Treasure list! 😉

  13. Gosh, that was one amazing trip!!! 😀 And everything seems extremely big on the pictures as well ;). Except for Georgetown, that totally reminds me of Amsterdam for some reason. Guess I need to do some Googling about it ;). I’d definitely want to go here as well, but my fear of flying will not allow me to yet *sighs*. Loved this post Marie!

      1. Haha! I only flew one time so far, and ended up getting a pneumonia from the return flight :’). But I’ll definitely try it again some day because, as you say, you need to fight your fears in order to get what you want and I want to see more places!! 😀

      2. I was sitting right behind a couple of sick people, just my luck xD. Add the stress factor of flying and thinking the plane was on fire on the way back home and #byeimmunesystem ;). Yes, teleporting would be fantastic! But with designated portal spots. I’d hate it if I was taking a shower and one of my ex-bf’s would teleport right in there with me or something *shudders*!
